Welcome to our Education website for the University of Arkansas for Medical Science’s Psychiatric Research Institute (PRI). If you’re looking for a training program with a supportive and educationally-focused environment, excellent faculty and facilities, and extensive research opportunities, you may have found your future home. Our Department is one of the most well-respected psychiatric research, education, and clinical care centers in the region and our trainees are among the best trained, and happiest, you’ll ever find. For psychologists, we offer an APA-approved internship and a fellowship in child and adolescent traumatic stress. For psychiatrists, we offer a general psychiatry residency program, an optional community-based psychiatry track at our Northwest Arkansas campus and ACGME-approved fellowships in child/adolescent, forensic, addiction, and geriatric psychiatry.
With over 100 faculty at various training sites including the Psychiatric Research Institute, the Arkansas State Hospital, the Central Arkansas Veterans Health System, the Arkansas Children’s Hospital, and the Little Rock Community Mental Health Center, our students, interns, residents, and fellows are trained in mental health treatment across all systems and throughout the continuum of care. We invite you to look over our website for information about our Department and educational programs and please feel free to contact me with any questions you have.

Vice Chair for Education
We welcome your interest in residency at the UAMS Department of Psychiatry. Our goal is to produce educated, well-trained, and professional physicians. We believe that a solid clinical base is essential before psychiatrists can reach their highest potential, not only as clinicians, but also as academicians, researchers, and administrators.
Our residency is an ACGME-approved, four-year program that accepts up to eight residents per year. Currently, the general residency has 31 residents. In addition we offer fellowships in Child and Adolescent, Forensics, Addictions, Geriatrics, and Research.
We have an excellent clinical faculty – many who have long been favorites among medical students. We recruit medical students into psychiatry at a rate much higher than the national average. There is an emphasis on teaching in our residency and a mutual respect between residents and faculty.
The Psychiatric Research Institute, one of only nine such institutes in the country, opened in 2009 and is considered our home base. This is a five story, 100,000 square foot space which houses clinical, administrative, research, and educational activities. It is the sixth Center of Excellence on the UAMS campus. It allows the Department of Psychiatry to come together as a unit and function in an even more collaborative manner.
Thanks for your interest. Please do not hesitate to contact us personally anytime.
