The UAMS Department of Psychiatry offers a Community-Based Psychiatry Track beginning in the PGY 3 year of residency training. This track is intended to provide additional training and experience for those residents who are interested in practicing in a more rural setting. This track is based in a non-tertiary care setting approximately 190 miles from the UAMS campus at a regional medical campus of UAMS where a portion of the medical student class moves to train. Our Department of Psychiatry and the Psychiatric Research Institute (PRI) operate a 30 bed inpatient unit and associated outpatient clinics in the Northwest of the state (Fayetteville). Two residents have successfully completed this track on an elective basis. Given this initial success, we have received ACGME approval of this innovation such that we can now offer a match number for this experience so that interested student can match directly into this track. We will therefore have two match numbers in the NRMP match, one for the general program (seven positions) and one for the Community-Based Psychiatry Track (one position). Residency candidates may apply to one or both in the order of their preference.

The northwest Arkansas area is a dynamic and beautiful area, with a population of almost half a million. It is home to the University of Arkansas, with a plethora of educational, cultural and outdoor activities, and is the fastest growing region of the state. If you are looking for an opportunity to complete your residency in a supportive and collegial environment that prepares you for the real world practice in smaller and rural communities, this is an exciting opportunity.

For further details, please see the program description in our online Resident Handbook.
