The Child Study Center is a unique institution with a mission to provide comprehensive evaluation and treatment of a wide range of mental health problems occurring in children and their families. Our treatment philosophy is based on building a strong relationship with our patients and using a number of evidence-based treatments in combination with a multi-disciplinary team approach.
Our goal is to be a model of excellence in providing for the mental health needs of children and their families as well as continuing to be a leading center in the training and education of mental health professionals specializing in the care of pediatric populations.
The Child Study Center Outpatient Therapy Clinic serves children throughout the entire state of Arkansas, from infancy up to the age of 18. The clinic is part of the Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry program at the UAMS Psychiatric Research Institute. However, the clinic is located on the second floor of the Center for Safe and Healthy Children at Arkansas Children’s Hospital.
The Child Study Center’s highly trained specialists can provide a personalized treatment plan for children with emotional and/or behavioral difficulties. Each child will receive a thorough assessment, which consists of clinical interviews, mental status exams and reviews of existing evaluation or historical data. Based on this assessment, treatment is initiated or appropriate referrals are made for psychological evaluations and subsequent treatment plan recommendations.
If accepted for therapy, the Child Study Center offers comprehensive specialized treatments including trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy, parent-child interaction therapy, and child-parent psychotherapy.
Common conditions that we assess and treat include:
- Trauma and stress-related disorders
- Attention-deficit/ Hyperactivity disorder
- Disruptive, impulse-control, and conduct disorders
- Obsessive-compulsive and related disorders
- Depressive disorders
- Bipolar disorder
- Anxiety disorders
Conditions we can assess for but do not treat include:
- Specific learning disorders
- Autism spectrum disorder
- Intellectual disability
Appointments
Your child’s primary care physician should send a referral to 501-603-1860. Once we receive the referral, our staff will contact your regarding the next steps for scheduling an appointment.
Children must be accompanied to the mental health and psychiatric assessment appointment by their parent and/or legal guardian. The parent and/or legal guardian must attend family sessions as prescribed by the treatment plan.
What should I bring to the appointment?
For your first appointment, please bring the child’s Social Security Card, insurance card, and a list of any medications your child may be taking. We also require a copy of the Guarantor’s photo ID.
