Former Department of Psychiatry residents describe their experiences at UAMS. Scroll down to see information about some of our recent graduates.

Payton Lea
Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry Fellow
Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Lea“UAMS has a wonderful psychiatry residency program! The incredible variety in both cases and clinical settings is really what sets this program apart from others. The ability to see patients at the VA, State Hospital, University Hospital, and the various clinics we rotate through really allows you to see a diverse set of pathologies. In addition, the support you receive from attendings is invaluable. Dr. Grooms played an influential role in not only preparing me for fellowship, but also helping shape my career as a future CL psychiatrist. Drs. Krain, Spollen, and Flynn were always available for general career advice and mentorship or just to stop and talk. I loved completing residency at UAMS and would 100 percent make the decision to go there again.”

Abbey Richison
Addiction Psychiatry fellow
Vanderbilt University Medical Center

Richison“UAMS was my first choice for residency because of the diverse rotations all in close proximity, the amazing faculty and residents, and the strong emphasis on education and mentoring. During my residency, I had the opportunity to work with outstanding mentors who helped push me to apply for national awards, engage in research, and take on leadership positions. Without my mentors’ support, I would not have felt so prepared when interviewing for a fellowship position and transitioning into my new role as a fellow.”

Karen Hall
Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellow
University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences

Hall“I always considered Child and Adolescent Psychiatry as a likely possibility for myself, but the UAMS psychiatry residency provided a variety of rotation sites that helped solidify this for me. Having exposure to Children’s hospital/clinics, the VA, the State Hospital, the Community Mental Health Center, and our University hospital was incredibly valuable. This variety of rotation sites were one of my favorite things about the residency program. I am thankful to get to continue my training with UAMS in the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry program, and I see myself serving a community here in Arkansas once fellowship ends — ideally closer to our family in Hot Springs.”

Erin Bider
Maternal Mental Health Program Director, Clinical Assistant Professor
University of Kansas Medical Center

Bider“My training at UAMS was invaluable to obtaining the position that I have now. Aside from clinical knowledge, the structured career development training that I got through my time in the Resident Academic Track helped me figure out what my dream career was and how to bring it to fruition.  I was able to explore the many facets of academic medicine, including teaching, mentorship, clinical research, and multidisciplinary collaboration. The mentorship I received from Drs. Coker, Ray-Griffith, and Williams was above and beyond what I ever could have expected and took my residency experience to the next level. They helped me negotiate and develop the position that I now hold, and I can confidently say that I would not be where I am today if I had chosen to train anywhere else. I actually miss residency often and would choose UAMS all over again if given the opportunity.”

Aparna Das
Inpatient Psychiatrist
AdventHealth Orlando

Das“I am grateful to UAMS for providing me with various educational and clinical opportunities. Psychiatry residency provided me with well-rounded clinical training. UAMS faculty supports residents with whatever rotations they wish to do, which helped me broaden my horizons. In my fourth year of residency, I got to work in specialty clinics like neurodiversity, student wellness, pain, VA women’s mental health clinic and did research at VA Geriatric Research Education and Clinical Center (GRECC), which were high-quality educational experiences. I am extremely thankful to UAMS psychiatry program for all the support and guidance.”
