Chelsea Wakefield

Chelsea Wakefield, Ph.D., LCSW

Chelsea Wakefield, Ph.D., LCSW, is the director of the UAMS Couples Center, a program committed to providing excellence in couples therapy. Dr. Wakefield is a nationally recognized psychotherapist, author and educator, who has provided individual, couples and group therapy for the past twenty-one years. She is a highly trained and effective clinician, experienced in dealing with the problems that couples face in the 21st century. She has published numerous articles, along with three books: Negotiating the Inner Peace Treaty, In Search of Aphrodite, and the upcoming Labyrinth of Love (spring of 2020).

Dr. Wakefield’s integrative approach comes from years of study and experience, gleaning clinical pearls from the best and brightest experts in this field. She also incorporates recent brain research on the neurobiology of attachment.  She is the only AASECT Certified Sex Therapist in Arkansas. Dr. Wakefield is known for her compassionate manner blended with deep clinical acumen that allows her to find the root of problems that have troubled couples for years.  She works with situations of betrayal and disconnection that feel unresolvable. Couples who come to work with her grow as individuals as they work through the underlying difficulties, dynamics and destructive patterns that have eclipsed the love they have always longed for.

She is the founding director of the UAMS Couples Center, which is devoted to three areas of couples work:

  • CLINICAL PRACTICE – Dr. Wakefield and her growing staff provide relationship counseling for troubled couples, couples in the early stages of commitment, and couples seeking to enrich their emotional and sexual connection. We work with couples of all ages and stages of relationship, and are an affirmative provider for all sexual and gender orientations.
  • CLINICAL TRAINING – Couples therapy differs in significant ways from individual therapy and requires specialized training. Wakefield offers a series of one-day and on-line trainings on topics related to relationship work, sex therapy, and Interdynamic Couples Therapy™– her method of couples work.  She trains clinicians and clergy who want to become competent and confident in this specialized area of service provision.
  • COMMUNITY WORKSHOPS – We offer community Relationship Enrichment workshops for people who are motivated to make their relationships stronger, happier and healthier. We can offer an evening program, a series, or weekend workshop at your organization or place of workshop.  Wakefield is also an engaging and sought after presenter for keynotes and conferences.  Contact us if your organization or place of workshop is interested in booking an event with her.
