Past Studies

Brain REST Project

The Brain REST study will hopefully help research scientists understand the effect of chemotherapy on brain function in breast cancer hosts.

The study seeks to investigate the mechanisms of Brain RESilience to Cancer Therapy (REST). Our aim is to discover whether breast cancer patients who receive chemotherapy are at risk for developing problems thinking, learning, remembering or making decisions.

The study involved women who:

  • are ages 18 or older;
  • have received chemotherapy for breast cancer in the past four years;
  • have no current diagnosis of any neurological disorders.

The study involved two visits to the Brain Imaging Research Center for cognitive tests to measure brain function and a brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan. The estimated amount of time for each visit was three hours. Participants received parking vouchers for each visit.

LIFE Brain Project

Our research utilizes brain MRI scans to investigate factors of natural aging, aiming to discern key processes of degeneration from those of healthy aging. Our primary goal is to increase the precision in early diagnosis of mental and neurological conditions while shedding light on factors of brain health among adults.

The study involved participants that were:

  • Men and women
  • Age 18 and over
  • No current diagnosis of neurological disorders

The participants:

  • Completed a study visit composed of:
    • Cognitive test session
    • Brain MRI session
    • Total participation ~4 hours
    • Parking & lunch voucher provided

UAMS Brain Imaging Research Center

The BIRC is working in a partnership with the Psychiatric Research Institute to study how reduced brain function can increase risk for psychiatric disorders in adulthood.

Family Health Patterns Project (FHP)

This research project studied factors that may increase the risk for alcohol and drug use in healthy individuals ages 18-25 who do not have any problems with these substances. This study looked at health behaviors in young adults in relation to their family’s health behaviors and lifestyle and underlying brain and immune system influences on these behaviors.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Ages 18-25
  • Healthy
  • Social Drinker
  • Have contact with at least one biological parent
  • Are available for appointments on weekdays during regular office hours
