The UAMS Psychiatric Research Institute will host an educational symposium designed to introduce Arkansas’ medical professionals to some of the latest innovations in interventional psychiatry. “Interventional Psychiatry – Innovative Treatment for Depression” will be held Saturday, Nov. 9, from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. in Room 8240 of the UAMS College of Public Health.
Among the presenters at this event will be Psychiatric Research Institute interim director Jeff Clothier, M.D., Andrew James, Ph.D., of the Psychiatric Research Institute’s Brain Imaging Research Center, Erika Petersen, M.D., of the UAMS Department of Neurosurgery and Richard Owings, M.D., a Little Rock psychiatrist in private practice. James will speak on the brain mechanism of electroconvulsive therapy while Petersen will discuss the use of deep-brain stimulation for the treatment of psychiatric illnesses. Owings will talk about the beginnings of interventional psychiatry, with Clothier wrapping up the symposium with a discussion on the “Mechanism of Effect in Genomic Testing.”
