The UAMS Brain Imaging Research Center (BIRC) and the Women’s Mental Health Program (WMHP) are recruiting participants for a research study that examines maternal behavior in depressed or opiate dependent mothers during the early postpartum period. Participants will be asked to submit a urine sample and to complete interviews and questionnaires regarding their background, mental health, drug use, recent life events and feelings about motherhood. They will also be asked to test computer tasks that are being developed to study maternal behavior, and to give an exit interview describing how the tasks can be improved.
Women being recruited for the study are those who have given birth within the last eight weeks and fall into one of the three following categories:
- women who have major depression;
- women who have opiate dependence, or
- women who don’t have major depression or drug use disorders.
