The UAMS Department of Psychiatry interviewed a total of 45 senior medical students via Zoom before matching with eight new top-notch residents. The 2021-2022 class, formally introduced March 19 during the official Match Day ceremony, includes seven graduates of the UAMS College of Medicine.
The UAMS students are slated to graduate on May 15. Charles Hunter grew up in Clarksville and graduated from Arkansas Tech with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry. He worked as a microbiologist before attending UAMS. Hunter was drawn to psychiatry while listening to patients share their stories during his third-year rotations at the Arkansas State Hospital and UAMS. William Hyatt, Ph.D., a native of Houston, received his bachelor of arts degree in biochemistry from Hendrix College. He then completed his M.D./Ph.D. at UAMS, with his Ph.D. research focused on the behavioral pharmacology of drugs of abuse.
Brooke Kamath is another native Arkansan, growing up in Siloam Springs. She completed her degree in Anthropology and honors interdisciplinary studies at the University of Central Arkansas before coming to UAMS, where she studied medicine and public health.
Nadia Khan grew up in Rogers and received a bachelor’s in Anthropology at Washington University in St. Louis, Mo. She discovered her interest in psychiatry during her third year at UAMS, where she was drawn to the holistic approach applied to patient care and the opportunity to interact with patients on such a personal level.
Jacob Linna earned a BS in Biological Physics at the University of Central Arkansas before entering UAMS. He developed an interest in psychiatry during the “Brain and Behavior” course in medical school. This interest became a passion during his third-year clerkship at the State Hospital.
Wesley White graduated from Hendrix College with a BA in Biology and Philosophy. White’s wife, Moriah Hollaway, will be a resident as well, matching with UAMS’ general surgery department. Jordyne Wolfe graduated from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, where she competed on the cross country team, before studying at UAMS.
Alex Preston, MPH, studied at Loyola Marymount and then Columbia University Mailman School of Public before attending the University of Texas’ Dell Medical School, where she is scheduled to graduate May 20.
All eight will begin their four-year residency training July 1. The trainees will see patients in the UAMS Psychiatric Research Institute’s inpatient units, the Walker Family Clinic, the Arkansas State Hospital, Arkansas Children’s Hospital, Centers for Youth and Families, and the VA hospitals in Little Rock and North Little Rock.
