Clozapine is the most effective antipsychotic for treatment-resistant schizophrenia. Unfortunately, it is grossly underutilized in our state. This lecture is designed to build confidence in the safe and effective use of clozapine for treatment-refractory schizophrenia. This session will combine real-world clinical expertise from an experienced psychiatrist, along with lived experience perspectives, to highlight both the therapeutic impact and challenges of clozapine treatment.
Participants will receive a comprehensive review of clozapine, including its indications, common adverse effects, and essential steps in pretreatment evaluation and informed consent. The lecture will emphasize practical and evidence-based approaches to safe titration, therapeutic drug level interpretation, and required initial and ongoing monitoring. Attendees will also learn to implement evidence-based strategies for side effect management.
Designed to be interactive, the session will conclude with a Q&A to address common clinical dilemmas and enhance prescriber confidence in optimizing clozapine therapy.
