Mastering Clozapine: An Updated Guide to Initiation, Monitoring, and Management

Tuesday, August 11th
Schmieding Center for Senior Health and Education
2422 N Thompson St. Springdale, AR

5:30 – 5:45 p.m. Meet-and-greet
5:45 – 7:15 p.m. Lecture
7:15 – 7:30 p.m. Close-out

Clozapine is the most effective antipsychotic for treatment-resistant schizophrenia. Unfortunately, it is grossly underutilized in our state. This lecture is designed to build confidence in the safe and effective use of clozapine for treatment-refractory schizophrenia. This session will combine real-world clinical expertise from an experienced psychiatrist, along with lived experience perspectives, to highlight both the therapeutic impact and challenges of clozapine treatment.

Participants will receive a comprehensive review of clozapine, including its indications, common adverse effects, and essential steps in pretreatment evaluation and informed consent. The lecture will emphasize practical and evidence-based approaches to safe titration, therapeutic drug level interpretation, and required initial and ongoing monitoring. Attendees will also learn to implement evidence-based strategies for side effect management.
Designed to be interactive, the session will conclude with a Q&A to address common clinical dilemmas and enhance prescriber confidence in optimizing clozapine therapy.

Lecture Outline

  • Introduction to Clozapine
  • Lived Experience Perspectives Indications
  • Common Adverse Effects
  • Pretreatment Evaluation and Consent Initial and Ongoing Monitoring

Learning Objectives

  • Identify appropriate indications for clozapine use.
  • Apply evidence-based strategies to initiate, titrate, and monitor clozapine therapy, including interpretation of serum levels and management of common adverse effects and drug interactions.
